NEW FACULTY FOR 2006–07

Although we are all saddened that Paul Hurley will be leaving Pomona for CMC, the department is excited to have two new faculty members who will teach value theory in 2006–07.

Noell Birondo

Michael Green

Noell works primarily in the areas of ethics, metaethics, and ancient Greek philosophy.

Noell received his B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley and his Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame (2004). His publications include "Aristotle on Illusory Perception" (Ancient Philosophy 2001), "Moral Realism without Values" (Journal of Philosophical Research 2006), and "Kantian Reasons for Reasons" (Ratio 2007). At present he is working on the connections between substantive ethical theory (e.g. of Aristotle or Kant) and metaethics.

This fall, Noell will be teaching Ethical Theory (Phil 32) and the Advanced Seminar in Value Theory (Phil 185P).

Michael works primarily in the areas of political philosophy, ethics, and early modern philosophy.

Michael received his BA from the University of Michigan and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. He has taught at McGill, Stanford, and the University of Chicago.

At the University of Chicago, he was a member of the Department of Philosophy and the Human Rights Program. He was awarded the University of Chicago's Quantrell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 2004. He has published and delivered papers on justice, nationalism, Thomas Hobbes, and David Hume. At present he is working on Hobbes's moral theory and questions about human rights and global justice.

This fall, Michael will be teaching Social and Political Philosophy (Phil 33). He's already developed a website for the course; please do check it out!

Michael maintains an active website, so do check that out as well. (Did you know that Pomona was the Roman Goddess of fruit trees?)
